Bible Text: Luke 9:28-35 |

The Fear of the Lord                   January 8, 2017

Luke 9:28-35  And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.  29  And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.  30  And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:  31  Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.  32  But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.  33  And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.  34  While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.  35  And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

Matthew 17:6  And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

When the Lord scares you to stop you from destroying yourself, it is so good. We must pay attention, heed Him. Let God’s fear cause us to stop, and let Him make changes in us. The fear of the Lord is salvation. A fool never fears God.

Proverbs 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Sometimes we listen to ourselves more than we should.

1 Corinthians 10:23  All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Romans 8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.

Just because there is no condemnation, when I am not obeying God there are consequences. There is no profit when we should be gaining riches, His inheritance. Heed God and fear the Lord – reverence Him. God is love, He loves you. Often times He scares us. Pay attention and take the changes, and go from glory to glory. We don’t need to fear the Devil. When we are not obeying God and He chastens us as sons, fear and honor Him. Receive it and endure. Quit being prideful and disrespectful to God. It’s the grace of God that we can have a heart that can be convicted. Job and David both said the fear of the Lord is wisdom. Don’t tempt God. He will not be mocked. Solomon knew this but at the end of his life it was in sorrow.

Proverbs 8:13  The fear of the LORD is to hate evil:

Proverbs 16:6  . . . by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

Don’t hang on to evil, you don’t have to have that weight, set it aside. He loves His children! Wake up! The fear of the Lord brings riches, honor, and life. It’s simple, just take the cup of salvation and drink. Quit thinking, just hear Him.

Proverbs 23:17  . . . be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

Why? Because decisions have to be made all day long and He doesn’t want any thought without reverence to Him. Don’t think with your mind. Man’s wisdom is foolishness to God. Man’s ways lead to destruction. Quit being stubborn. When there is no fear of the Lord, there will be no peace of God.

Psalms 128:1-4  A Song of degrees. Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.  2  For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.  3  Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.  4  Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.

Don’t fear man, your spouse, kids, society, your boss – fear the Lord. Abraham feared the Lord and he increased, but Lot would not and he lost it all. Happy ones fear the Lord.

Romans 13:11-14  And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.  12  The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.  13  Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.  14  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Wake up and fear the Lord. It is a joyful thing. Walk in all the ways of the Lord until we see Him face to face!
