Bible Text: Genesis 27:1-27 |

 Grace’s Plan                              February 5, 2017

Genesis 27:1-29  Isaac called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, take, I pray thee, thy weapons, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;  4  And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. . . And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.  9  Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:  10  And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.  11  And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:  12  My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.  13  And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.  15  And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau and put them upon Jacob her younger son:  16  And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:  18  And he came unto his father . . .  21  And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee . . . 22  And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him . . . And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him.  26  And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.  27  And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:  28  Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:  29  Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee…

The beauty of Grace’s plan. Completely undeserved, unexpected. Here we have not only the love of a mother to her son, but the devotion to the word of God. The word of God testifies so clearly of grace’s plan. The birthright was not supposed to go to Jacob, he was not the firstborn, he didn’t smell or look right. He was fearful, and told his mom to forget about it. Grace speaks to us, “obey only my voice”. Only receive grace.

2 Peter 3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Our Lord is full of grace and truth. He said, let this curse be upon me.

Galatians 3:13  Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

The goat represents the sin offering. God loves that smell. The blood of Jesus.

Isaiah 53:10  Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin

He was made sin for us. There is nothing else pleasing to the Father but His blood upon us.

Genesis 27:26  And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.

Don’t you parents love when your children come to you? This is what Jesus did for you. God loves to hold us and draw us nigh to kiss us. Was there anything about Jacob that went in there? It was everything that grace did. We go to the Father with the life of Jesus Christ. That work on the cross was complete. Everlasting life.

Galatians 2:20  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Jesus did this for us, not with the blood of animals, but with His own blood. The finished work. We have been made the sweet sacrifice of thanksgiving. My Father longs for my kisses.

Look how Jacob was blessed. Genesis 27:28-29. And in greater wonder it can’t be compared to - I will make known to all that I have loved thee (Rev 3:9). The bride is a work of grace. Don’t let the enemy steal your joy; making you feel not worthy, not accepted, that something can separate you from the love of God. Don’t let the cares of this life make you delay. He says, “Come near now”. He wants you to be His Son’s joint heir.

Romans 8:17  And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

This is the calling. We don’t see these fiery trials as strange things.

Philippians 3:8  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

We rejoice in this calling. We’ve been given everything in the Lord. He said it, and that’s that! Let Him open your heart in a deeper, wider way. He wants to embrace you tightly and smell the beauty of His Son. Be thankful for the plan of love and grace.
