Bible Text: Judges 6:11-17 |

Quit Living in the Past                          March 17, 2019

Judges 6:11-17  And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which wasin Ophrah, that pertainedunto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide itfrom the Midianites.  12  And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD iswith thee, thou mighty man of valour.  13  And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where beall his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.  14  And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?  15  And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family ispoor in Manasseh, and I amthe least in my father's house.  16  And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.  17  And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.

Gideon was giving God every excuse why “I can’t”; too poor, too lowly and so on. It’s all just a statement of unbelief. Gideon had been programmed that he had gotten the short end of the stick. Why was this his mindset? Because he was living in the past. The past will always imprison you in defeat. The apostle Paul set it right:

Philippians 3:13  Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but thisone thing I do,forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

When the one that was given the high calling message tells you the one thing to do – you listen. The one thing is to win Christ. Before = a better rank. Without getting passed the past, there is no way of winning Christ. Gideon was stuck in his pity. It changed in one minute because Gideon quit looking behind. He finally hears the voice of God, “I am with you, mighty man of valor”. Cast all your cares upon me. The Lord doesn’t address Gideon’s ‘woe is me list’, and say, “let’s see how we can get closure”. The closure for all of us was done at the cross. God’s love is real; man’s compassion is fake, and if you go after it, it will defeat you. The Lord wants us to get passed the drama. Heaven is real! The bride is real! Quit murmuring. Hear Him calling your name, saying, “I am with you, mighty man of valor”. God says I have a plan for you, ruling and reigning with Me. It’s time for us to hear the word of God and quit hearing the lies. Lies will only embed in you excuses and bitterness. Realize you are seated in the heavens. Be transformed by faith in God’s plan. Don’t be stuck. He is your faithful God. Let His word direct you to even greater power than Gideon. He gives the increase. The trumpet is about to sound, we must be ready and you won’t be ready by looking behind. The enemy wants you locked into the past. Be in God’s future. Get free. Mighty = king. Valor = wealth, strength, riches, honor. This is His life living in you. You are not your past. Things do not define you. We are aliens, just passing through.

Galatians 2:20  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

You are not what you’ve done or how you look.

1 John 3:2  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

We are God’s choice – made for reigning together with Him. He says, “I am with you mighty king, you’re rich and strong. Believe Him!
