Bible Text: Deuteronomy 8:2-3 |

Humbled for Things Eternal         May 15, 2016

Deuteronomy 8:2-3 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. 3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
This was written to Israel but the Word applies to all of us. It was written for our admonition. We may not know what’s in our heart but God does. He may show us things that need corrected, or how great our faith is.
The Lord led them in the wilderness and allowed them to hunger. He was going to feed them not only naturally but spiritually. If we are satisfied with our natural possessions we won’t pursue our spiritual inheritance.
Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
The Lord knows we have natural needs but He’s working something more for us in eternity.
2 Corinthians 4:18 . . . the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Manna represents the word of God.
John 6:48-50 & 63 I am that bread of life. 49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 63 … the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
The Word is our life and Jesus is the Word of God.
Deuteronomy 8:11-18 Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God… 12 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full… 13 … and all that thou hast is multiplied; 14 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; 15 Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness…where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
Like our country today – many have forgotten the Lord. They try to take Him out of schools, etc. Like Egypt, which represents the world, they are in bondage. But it only takes one step towards Jesus, no matter how deep in the world we are, to be free from sin and bondage. The Lord allowed them to be thirsty.
1 Corinthians 10:4 … for they drank of that spiritual … and that Rock was Christ.
When we drink from the spiritual Rock we will never thirst again. They needed to get their eyes on the Lord.
16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
The Lord is about doing us good. He knows how. It may not be something we would choose.
17 And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.
Trust Him, we don’t want to think it is our own power.
18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, The Lord is the one – if you have material blessings, honor God and enjoy it. If not, know it is for your good and give glory to God.
Revelation 3:17 Because thou (Laodiceans) sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
They thought they had it all, but God looks at the heart and saw they were wretched and poor.
James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. … God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
We need the grace of God. He doesn’t force us. We can be rebellious, but submit and He will pour out more grace. We have to be humble to receive it! There are many example of great men in the bible. Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Gideon, David, Peter, Paul. The Lord sought them out. Take this for your own life. He wants to exalt us in due time. We just say I will go and He does the rest. How does this apply to us? We have been given great revelations too. Like David we may have displeased the Lord. But do we get up and go on? Like Jacob do we try to figure things out in our own minds? The Lord will show us when we are foolish. He wants more for us and only He can provide. He wants us to be princes. Like Joseph, we may be shut up in a trial, but He is getting us ready to sit on the throne with Him as His bride. This will take humbling. He is able and knows what He is doing. Have confidence in Him!
