Bible Text: Deuteronomy 6:5-8 |

Command of Love                       June 18, 2017

Deuteronomy 6:5-8 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  (6)  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:  (7)  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  (8)  And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

This is such a command of love from our Father. What He gives us here is the only hope, only power, the only answer for everything we’ll ever face. It is an encouragement to parents. If you want treasure in your homes and riches for every life, then stand on the Word and don’t be moved.

There are four prominent things in these verses to parents, especially fathers:

  1. Love
  2. Teach
  3. Give our time
  4. Live testimony

Love: v. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart. His Word is in your heart, He promised. This speaks of love (truth in love). Nothing is of any power without God’s love. You have to receive it in love, believing He unconditionally loves you. You can’t be obedient in yourself. He captivates me and carries me on to do His good pleasure. He is so merciful and kind; I can’t help but love Him. Know the love of Christ. How you know Him is to know His love. He sends us out with this commandment, to love the Word! Love that trusts Him will love with wisdom and not provoking others to wrath. The presence or lack of joy, peace, and harmony is often predicated on the husband’s love or lack thereof for his wife. It sets the tone.

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Bring that love into your house. If you think there is something lacking in your home, fall more in love with the truth.

Teach: v. 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children. Without a vision the people perish. Without a vision kids perish, they grow up without direction.

Proverbs 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Have a heart for the gospel. Make moves for the truth, prepare your home to hear the gospel. Away from God you will become lean. Stand for the truth, Paul’s’ gospel. There is a costly train wreck waiting when we step away from Paul’s gospel. Teach children in the way they should go. Don’t compromise. Fight for the truth in your home!

Time: v. 7 …and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  Give your time, talk with your children, and walk with them. Time is precious. The greatest gift is giving time to kids. It’s what they remember. Put family before ourselves. Our most valuable asset is our children.

Testimony: v. 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. Walk the walk. Have a testimony. The most impact we can have on our children’s life is to walk it. They perceive when they are loved.

Colossians 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Don’t be quick to anger, wishing you didn’t say something. But have a testimony of sincerity, being real with your children. We all make mistakes, especially parents. Instead of hiding mistakes, be open with your kids. Let them know we are remorseful when we make mistakes. Be quick to say, “I’m sorry, that was wrong”. Mistakes make the greatest teaching points in a life. Let mistakes teach you and gain wisdom. Be to the praise of the glory of His grace (Eph. 1:6). Let us be epistles read of men in our homes

2Corinthians 3:2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:

God help us, may we love one another. Spend time with your children; don’t be too busy for the things God has placed in your life. Live the love of God and be willing to be corrected. Thank Him in all things for He is God!
